They counted them out – and they counted them in. Slowly. On this day, it was not about speed, but rather about endurance, because the annual “outing” of the Wisbech and District Historic Vehicle Club Road Run began and ended in Wisbech.

But not before a variety of classic vehicles – from trucks to buses, cars to motorbikes – made their way through the Cambridgeshire countryside, to Lincolnshire and back to Cambridgeshire again.

Along the way we were able to explore the towns and villages of the Fens – albeit briefly – before stopping for refreshments in Peterborough (effectively taking stock) and then continuing on to return to Wisbech.

The club knows what it takes, apart from the Covid year, having organised the event for three decades – this was in fact the 30th.th Time at which the road race took place. The club describes it as a “cavalcade of classic vehicles” and the excitement of the participants was palpable to the many spectators who watched them on their epic excursion.

The only thing participants knew for sure that the road race would take place was that organisers said before the rally that they normally try to release all the details in April, but this year they were delayed.

And not because they lacked enthusiasm.

“While we normally start advertising in April, this year there was a much greater focus on paperwork and health and safety issues, resulting in several months of delay,” a club official explained.“This appears to have been the case at many events across the country and we are very grateful to have received approval to hold the event as planned.

“To ensure that we can continue to hold the event in future years, we would be very grateful for your support in observing the posted speed limits, parking in the designated areas and following the instructions of our volunteer stewards on the day of the event.”

The route started at the Somers Road car park in Wisbech, continued with a break at Lynch Wood Peterborough and ended with the awards ceremony back at the Somers Road car park.

All classic and historic cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles are invited to participate – the only condition is that your pride and joy is at least 25 years old.

The day’s proceeds will be added together and added to the £10,000 raised for charity over the years.

But what really counts is participation, even if not everyone returned to Wisbech.

The Wisbech & District Historic Vehicle Club describes itself as “a small club of enthusiasts of old vehicles and welcomes anyone with an interest in old vehicles.”

“You don’t have to own one, you just have to be interested enough to pay our horrendous membership fees!”
