Former NC State quarterback fails to make NFL roster

Devin Leary, a former NC State football player and one-year signal caller for Kentucky, caused three turnovers and posted a passer rating of 13.5 in the Baltimore Ravens’ final preseason game on Saturday. With that in mind, it was no big surprise that the franchise released the 24-year-old on Tuesday.

Lamar Jackson and Josh Johnson are the only two quarterbacks on the team’s initial 53-man roster. Leary and fellow rookie Emory Jones both stayed until Tuesday but did not survive the latest wave of layoffs.

As Jon Alfano of Baltimore Ravens On SI noted, Leary could very well stay in Baltimore as a member of the practice squad:

“There’s a good chance he stays on the practice squad … but he still has a long way to go before he becomes an NFL quarterback.”

Leary was selected in the sixth round (No. 218 overall) of the 2024 NFL Draft.

He finished the preseason with 15 of 28 passes for 95 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions.

After appearing in at least four games in each of his four seasons in Raleigh, including a 35-touchdown season as a junior in 2021, Leary transferred to Kentucky for his senior year.
