Former Florence County deputy faces trial for fatal police-involved shooting

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A former Pee Dee sheriff’s deputy is facing charges in connection with an officer-involved shooting that turned fatal earlier this year.

In a statement released Wednesday, Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye confirmed that SLED is seeking criminal action against Treyvon Sellers in connection with a May 26 incident.

According to records, Sellers was booked into the Florence County Detention Center on Wednesday. He is charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault and abuse of authority.

In that incident, Sellers allegedly shot 43-year-old William Rankin as he pursued him into a home after a chase. Rankin allegedly crashed into a home on East National Cemetery Road before being attacked by Sellers. Another person was injured inside the home by a tracking dog unit and required medical attention.

Joye said Sellers was placed on leave after the shooting and met with the families of the two injured people.

“I have been as open and transparent as I could be, and I have expressed my deep regret and sadness over this incident,” Joye said in his statement. “Our office and our officers are held to high standards. This incident is not representative of our values, our mission, or our training.”

While on leave, however, Sellers was charged by SLED in connection with a domestic violence incident in Darlington County that occurred in July. Online records show Sellers was subsequently arrested and booked into the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center in Darlington County on July 31, where he was charged with third-degree domestic violence and breach of peace. He was released a day later on $6,000 bail.

Joye said Sellers was fired from his agency following the arrest.
