Flyers should give the old friend a big chance

Flyers should give the old friend a big chance

Looking at the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster, you could argue that they could use a little more depth at forward. For that reason, it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world for them to sign another forward before training camp begins, either through a cheap one-year deal or a professional tryout (PTO).

Although most of the big-name free agents from this class are no longer available, there are still a few interesting players looking for a new home. One player Philadelphia might want to consider is former Flyer Nick Cousins.

Cousins was selected by the Flyers in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and spent the first three seasons of his career there before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. From there, he played for the Montreal Canadiens, Vegas Golden Knights, Nashville Predators and, most notably, the Florida Panthers.

With the Panthers, Cousins became a strong part of the bottom six. His immensely physical style of play and ability to provoke the team helped him become an impactful forward for the Panthers. Despite this, he was still not signed at this point in the offseason.

Cousins had a down year with the Panthers in 2023-24, scoring seven goals and eight assists, but considering he scored nine goals and 27 points for the Panthers in 2022-23 alone, he has the potential to rebound if given another chance.

Overall, the Flyers wouldn’t be wrong to sign Cousins on a PTO. If he impresses in training camp and gets a contract, he would be another solid option for bottom-six teams, especially considering he can play both center and wing. His combative style of play could also make him an impactful addition, as his career-high 130 hits last season impressively demonstrated.

Whether it’s the Flyers or another NHL club, Cousins should be able to land a contract or a paid vacation in the coming weeks.
