Florida A&M beats Norfolk State 24-23 in the second half

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Florida A&M Rattlers left Atlanta on Saturday the same way they left in December…victorious.

FAMU overcame an early bout of weakness against the Norfolk State Spartans to defeat NSU 24-23 in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Center Parc Stadium.

Norfolk State (0-1) had plenty of success on the ground at first, surprising FAMU’s (1-0) “Dark Cloud Defense” with an 82-yard touchdown run, followed by a 12-play, 73-yard run that quickly put James Colzie’s team behind 14-0. From there, Daniel Richardson and the offense came alive with a field goal and a 20-yard touchdown to Thad Franklin Jr., cutting the deficit to four at halftime.

After the locker room, the Orange-Greens continued to push, scoring touchdowns on two consecutive drives through Richardson’s arm, while NSU had to settle for a field goal, giving the Rattlers their first advantage of the evening.

The Spartans scored the game’s final touchdown, attempting a two-point conversion and the lead after an offside penalty against FAMU. Quarterback Jalen Daniels tried to hold onto the ball and find the end zone, but was stopped by Aric Horne, allowing the Rattlers to hold on to the lead.

Florida A&M’s offense was able to play down the remaining 6:21 minutes on the clock.

The Rattlers head to Bragg Memorial Stadium next weekend to face another MEAC opponent: They host South Carolina State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
