First weather warning day on Thursday as gusty winds and rain come from Debby

First weather warning day on Thursday as gusty winds and rain come from Debby

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – Thursday remains a First Alert Weather Day as the impacts of Debby coincide with the first day of school for many students.

  • First weather warning day on Thursday with increasing wind and heavier rainfall
  • It’s over for Friday
  • Decreasing humidity is expected next week

Debby is moving inland as a weakening tropical storm, bringing with it the threat of gusty rain to our area. There will be a steep divide between what we see today. Areas to the west may not see a drop of rain today. Areas to the east could see steady, torrential rain for most of the day. In the north of the state, Spartanburg, Laurens, Union and Gaffney are most likely to see heavy rain, while places like Greenville and Greenwood will get occasional passing showers from the far reaches of Debby. In the mountains, Rutherford, Polk and McDowell are most likely to get rain, while the rest of Western North Carolina will get little more than an isolated shower.

Keep in mind that a slight westward shift in Debby’s track will push the rain further west across the area and drench more of us, which is still not completely out of the question. The rain will steadily retreat northeastward throughout the late afternoon and dry by midnight.

There is a slight risk of localized flooding, especially east of I-26, with up to 3 inches of rain possible in some areas. If a flash flood warning is issued for your area, move to higher ground immediately.

Even if there is no rain, clouds will be moving in for most areas. The further you get into the mountains to the west and northeast Georgia, the more sunshine there will be. Winds will be gusty for all of us, with a steady breeze up to 20 mph and gusts to 30 to 35 mph.

Friday brings many improvements to our forecast. Aside from an isolated shower or storm unrelated to Debby, we have a nice mix of sun and clouds. It’s hot again with highs between 27 and 32 degrees. Saturday is a carbon copy of Friday, and the humidity sticks around for a few more days. Sunday sees a break in the humidity and temperatures drop a bit. Highs will be between 27 and 32 degrees, making for a great weekend to get out and do something.
