First weather warning day (night) for the night from Wednesday to Thursday

First weather warning day (night) for the night from Wednesday to Thursday

WEDNESDAY – FIRST WEATHER WARNING NIGHT: It’s been a calm day so far across the region, as most have seen persistent clouds with 20-30 mph wind gusts from the east-southeast. Temperatures have remained on the cool side thanks to the aforementioned cloud cover, ranging in the upper 60s to mid 70s during the afternoon hours. Skies will be partly cloudy in many locations during the late afternoon hours. As for severe weather potential, the Storm Prediction Center has rated the easternmost part of North Dakota, the Central Valley and parts of northwest Minnesota at a low risk (Level 1, isolated) for severe storms, with a low risk (Level 2, scattered) area for severe storms from the Devils Lake basin down to the James River Valley. Hailstones up to 1.75 inches and damaging winds up to 70 mph are the main hazards. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded a portion of the state, almost exclusively areas west of our region, to (Level 3, Enhanced) for severe weather. The westernmost North Dakota counties of Stutsman, La Moure, and Dickey are included in this area. Jamestown and Ellendale are NOT included in this expanded area. There is a slight threat of tornadoes, generally west of our region. These storms will continue from west to east throughout the night, so make sure you have ways to receive warnings/alerts during the night! It might be a good idea to park in the garage before bed if possible, and bring in the potted plants, too.

THURSDAY: On Thursday morning, rain showers and some thunderstorms are expected in our region. Apart from the rain, the sky will be partly to mostly cloudy. The lowest temperatures in the morning will be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, the highest temperatures during the day will mostly be 21 degrees Celsius. It will remain gusty again throughout the day.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND (FRIDAY TO MONDAY): The holiday weekend will begin with sunny skies and gusty winds. Friday morning temperatures are expected to be around 15 degrees, with highs between 21 and 25 degrees during the day. Winds will be from the west-northwest, gusting 20 to 30 mph. Saturday will bring similar temperatures (perhaps 2 to 3 degrees warmer), sunshine, and a breeze from the northwest. Sunday will be 6 to 12 degrees cooler, with highs between 18 and 21 degrees, with plenty of sunshine and a fairly light breeze from the north. Labor Day on Monday still looks fairly sunny, with temperatures remaining between 21 and 25 degrees.
