First trailer for “The War of the Rohirrim” reveals a Studio Ghibli epic set in Middle Earth

Warner Bros. Discovery and New Line Cinema return with the upcoming animated theatrical release of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim on December 13, 2024. The brand new trailer shows how the fantasy world created by author JRR Tolkien and filmmaker Peter Jackson is transformed into an anime epic worthy of Studio Ghibli.

According to a press release The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an animated prequel set 183 years before the original film trilogy. It expands the story of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan, from what Tolkien briefly told in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. The film follows Helm and his people as they fight back against the forces of Wulf, a “cunning and ruthless Dunlending lord” obsessed with making Helm pay for the murder of his father. Hèra, Helm’s tomboyish daughter, is caught in the middle as she tries to protect her people while also stopping her childhood friend – who has tried to marry her – from declaring war on her father.
