First day at Chatfield School postponed by one week

LAPEER, Michigan (WNEM) – The start of school at Chatfield School has been delayed by a week.

The school announced on Saturday, August 17, that the new start date will be Monday, August 26.

In addition, the school appointed Bob Kurtz as its new interim principal.

“Given the changes required this summer, we continue to make every effort to emphasize that Chatfield School’s highest priority is student safety, well-being and academic success,” the school said.

This came after Keith Corbett, a former music teacher at Chatfield, was charged with multiple sex crimes against children.

In late June, days after the allegations first surfaced, the school announced that he was no longer employed there and that it had no information suggesting that any of its students had been involved in the incident.

“We are available by appointment (or, if you feel more appropriate, the local sheriff’s office or city police) should you or your child wish to discuss this situation,” the school said.

The school encourages anyone with questions to contact the board via email.

The announcement also stated that the kindergarten open day has been postponed to Thursday, August 22nd, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
