“It takes two,” as the saying goes, and no day embodies this sentiment better than National Couples Day.

Celebrated on August 18 every year, National Couples Day originated in 2010 as part of a product advertisement and has since evolved into a non-commercial celebration of the love, companionship and well-being that being together as a couple can bring.

In the video above you can see a romantic couple who are still in love after 71 years of marriage

Whether you’re married, engaged, in a committed relationship, or in a relationship, for many people, life just feels more complete when they can share it with someone special. National Couples Day encourages all couples to pause and appreciate their partner, regardless of gender, orientation, or ethnicity.

Suggested ways couples can celebrate and strengthen their romantic bond include:

  • Spend some quality time together. Put the phone away and focus on each other without distractions.
  • Do something fun together, whether it’s an elaborate adventure or just a simple romantic walk.
  • Talk! Communication is key in any relationship, so take the opportunity to deepen your bond and mutual understanding by sharing your hopes, dreams, concerns and fears.
  • Say thank you! Gratitude and appreciation are always welcome, whether in a relationship or outside of it. The desire to be noticed is a natural human trait. And saying thank you doesn’t have to be a grand gesture; a kind word, a handwritten note or a thoughtful gift can speak volumes about your feelings for your significant other.
