The award recognizes the best offensive player in Division I football who also possesses the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community spirit and tenacity, as well as the determination to overcome adversity and injury to achieve goals.
In addition, the nominee must have either played and graduated from a Texas high school and/or currently play football at a Texas Division I four-year university.
Finn, who was mentioned multiple times on the preseason candidate lists for the Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award and Golden Arm Award, was named the 2023 MAC Most Valuable Player after leading the league in passing accuracy (151.04), passing yards (2,657), touchdown passes (22) and total offense (247.7) a year ago. His 563 rushing yards were the most among MAC quarterbacks, and his dual-threat skills earned him MAC West Offensive Player of the Week honors three times. He also earned his second career All-Conference honor and first as a first-team selection in 2023.
A Detroit native, Finn comes to Baylor after playing in 45 games during his college career, including 32 starts. He has rushed for 7,074 yards and 63 passing touchdowns and has rushed for another 1,840 yards on 389 carries with 25 TDs in his career.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award nominee list will be narrowed to a maximum of 16 semifinalists in November and up to five finalists in December, selected by broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and past winners. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award banquet on January 22, 2025, where the winner will be announced.
In the past, former Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty won the inaugural Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in 2013, and most recently former running back Abram Smith was named a finalist for the award in 2021.
