Father causes a sensation with epic musical performance at his son’s wedding

Father causes a sensation with epic musical performance at his son’s wedding

A father enlivened his son’s wedding with a musical number dedicated to the bride and groom.

Bruce Miller, a pediatric ophthalmologist from Weston, Florida, says, “Music is my life.” Not only did he play in a band while in medical school, his daughter and wife also enjoy singing, and his son Jake Miller is a professional musician.

When Bruce was set to toast Jake’s wedding to his now-wife Brandi, he let his musical talent shine by surprising everyone with a personal parody of a song for the couple. Jake posted a clip of his father’s performance on TikTok, captured by photo and video company Wild & Roam, where the video has been viewed more than two million times.

Bruce came up with the idea after his family attended a wedding where the bride’s father-in-law sang a spin-off of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.” Inspired, Bruce asked Jake and Brandi, “Can I do this at your wedding?” and they said, “Absolutely.”

In the year leading up to Jake and Brandi’s June 1 wedding, Bruce was secretly working on a song that would best honor the couple.

“I’m a ’70s rock music junkie, and the (former) band Looking Glass had a hit called ‘Brandy,'” Bruce, 61, tells TODAY.com. When he realized he could easily change the lyrics to describe the couple, Bruce started writing.

Bruce then called a local producer that Jake had worked with before, went to the studio and took an MP3 file with him that he could memorize and practice whenever he was in the car.

“I wanted to do it right,” says Bruce.

When Bruce stood up to give his speech at the wedding in the greater Santa Barbara area, he was agitated because he had recently been in the hospital with kidney problems.

“I wasn’t sure if I would even make it to the wedding,” he says. “I was so overwhelmed and grateful.”

After Bruce had given his speech as father of the groom, he told the guests, “Oh yes, and one more thing…” and started singing his song, the lyrics of which include:

They met the old-fashioned way

Jake was on tour near Tampa Bay

He saw her picture on Instagram like this and sent her a direct message

He said, “Hey, come to my show”

She said, “I’ve never heard of you, so why should I go?”

But they stayed in touch and love began to grow

And here we are today

Jake, 31, was not surprised by his father’s efforts.

“That’s just the way he is,” Jake tells TODAY.com. “The reason I got into music was my dad – he always played Bruce Springsteen and the Eagles at home and taught me to play drums when I was 8.”

Jake adds: “My friends think he is the cool and funny dad.”

Brandi, a speech therapist, and Jake started dating in August 2019 when he was living in Los Angeles and she was living in Florida.

When the pandemic began, the couple stayed with Jake’s family in Florida. “When I saw how well she got along with my parents and my sister, I knew she was the one,” Jake says.

Bruce agrees. “We knew from the beginning that Brandi would bring out the best and happiest version of Jake.”

Now that Bruce’s daughter Jenny is engaged, Bruce is thinking about how he can top his performance at her wedding – perhaps with a parody of the Tommy Tutone song “867-5309”?

Bruce doesn’t have stage fright.

“My endorphins kicked in,” Bruce said of his performance at Jake and Brandi’s wedding. “I had the time of my life.”
