Fatal accident on Kelly Drive due to driver making illegal left turn: Sources

Tragedy on Kelly Drive: One person was killed in a car accident in Fairmount Park.

The accident occurred Thursday afternoon shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Kelly Drive and Reservoir Drive, authorities said.

Philadelphia police sources told FOX 29’s Steve Keeley that five people were in a Nissan Altima, a ride-share service. The driver of the Nissan Altima attempted to make an illegal left turn, was first struck from behind by a Chicago woman driving a Nissan Rogue rental car, after which the Altima veered into the path of an oncoming BMW that was entering Kelly Drive from Reservoir Drive.

One of the five occupants of the first Nissan was killed, sources told Keeley. Officials said a 41-year-old man in one of the vehicles was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he died.

Additionally, a 44-year-old man was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and was listed in stable condition. There were no details on what vehicle the man was in.

A full investigation into the crash is underway. No further details about the other people have been released.
