Farmington Public Schools appoints Kelly Coffin as interim principal

FARMINGTON – Farmington Public Schools officials say the school district has no plans to rush the search for a new superintendent. The board has appointed Kelly Coffin, the school district’s assistant superintendent for innovation and strategic initiatives, as the school district’s interim superintendent.

Coffin will begin his new role on September 2, after Superintendent Dr. Christopher Delgado leaves the school to take a new position with Oakland Schools.

Coffin, who joined the district in 2020, was viewed as “the ideal candidate to provide the stability desired in the short term while the board seeks more comprehensive feedback in seeking a permanent solution.”

Coffin has served as a classroom teacher, school principal and district superintendent.

“It is an honor and privilege to be selected as interim superintendent for Farmington Public Schools,” said Coffin. “I look forward to working and learning with students, staff and families as we continue the great work across the district.”

As the district begins the search for a permanent superintendent, board members emphasized the need for stability, community feedback and a desire to meet current goals and continue positive momentum, the district said in a news release announcing the decision.

The board will continue to gather internal and external feedback over the next few months on the qualities it seeks in the district’s next superintendent and the selection process, and will outline the process for permanently filling the superintendent position, including whether to consider internal/external candidates and whether to bring in a consultant in the future, officials said.

The board filled a second vacancy this month, electing former board member David Turner as interim at the Aug. 13 meeting. Turner will fill the seat formerly held by Trustee Zach Rich, who resigned after moving away from the district.

The appointment fulfills the board’s commitment to fill the seat before the 30-day deadline. Turner served on the board from 2015 to 2018. He serves as senior vice president of human resources at the Motor City Casino Hotel.
