Family seeks answers after 72-year-old senior goes missing and his house catches fire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A Memphis family is searching for answers days after their loved one went missing and their home went up in flames.

72-year-old Edwin Irby disappeared on Tuesday. Memphis police have issued a city alert about his disappearance.

“I dropped him off around two o’clock because he had a doctor’s appointment and he said he was going to get some rest. After that, I never saw him again,” said Cecelia Mitchell, Uncle Mike’s niece.

According to the Memphis Fire Department, Irby’s home, where he had lived for 30 years, accidentally caught fire around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

According to MFD, several generators were responsible for providing power to the house. However, Irby was nowhere to be found.

“If he knew his house was burning down, why didn’t he come forward? That’s what concerns me. I’m trying to figure out if there’s something wrong with what happened to him. Does anyone have him? How could he not know his house was burning,” Mitchell said.

On Friday morning, police and firefighters were again called to Pecan Circle and Airways Boulevard, directly across from Irby’s home, to investigate another incident in which human remains were discovered.

The identity of the person and the cause of death were not disclosed.

However, Irby’s family said they still have high hopes for answers about Edwin’s whereabouts.

“Like I said, Uncle Michael, if you see me or anyone you know, he’s on medication. He doesn’t have his medication, so I don’t know what’s going on. We’re just hoping he comes back and praying for his safety,” Mitchell said.

If you believe you have seen Edwin or have any information on his whereabouts, call Memphis Police or Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.
