At around 3 p.m. and 15 kilometers later, the family ran out of water and began to show signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion due to the high temperatures.

Park rangers alerted the DPS, who dispatched a Pilatus PC-12 aircraft to search for the desperate family.

The flight crew quickly found the family on the mountain and DPS then sent an Airbus H-125 helicopter to assist in the rescue.

A tactical flight officer was dispatched from the helicopter to conduct a medical assessment of the family. The officer concluded that a rescue operation using a winch helicopter was the best course of action for their safety.

The family was lifted into the helicopter and transported down the mountain where ground rescue teams provided medical care.
