Family, including 3-month-old baby, rescued after being stranded on mountain

A family of three, including a three-month-old baby, was rescued from a high mountain in Guadalupe Mountains National Park in Culberson County, Texas, on Tuesday, August 20, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Their identities have not been released publicly.

The two 23-year-old parents went hiking with their toddler on the morning of August 20. At around 3 p.m., 15 kilometers later, the family ran out of water, the DPS said in its press release on Wednesday, August 28. Due to the high temperatures in the park throughout the day, they soon began to show signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

At 4:15 p.m., park rangers alerted DPS, which dispatched a Pilatus PC-12 aircraft to search for the family. The crew immediately located the family, and DPS dispatched an Airbus H-125 helicopter to assist in the rescue.

When the helicopter arrived, a Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) was released from the helicopter to medically evaluate the family. The officer determined that “a rescue operation using a winch helicopter was the best course of action for their safety,” the DPS press release states.

After all three were lifted into the aircraft, they were flown down the mountain and met by ground rescue teams who provided them with medical assistance.

DPS released photos and video of the rescue mission on Wednesday. The footage included clips of TFO personnel examining the family as well as footage of the family being lifted from the ground into the helicopter.
