Exclusive: Sunny Kaushal on films that glorify problematic male protagonists: “We should consider them as works of fiction”

In the last year or two, there has been a lot of discussion about some films and their attempt to glorify a sadistic male protagonist in love. Many people doubted the negative impact of such films on the young viewers. In a recent conversation with Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba star Sunny Kaushal, we wanted to know his opinion on this as he played a grey character in his latest film. Sunny Kaushal spoke about it in detail, read on to know more.

Sunny Kaushal: “Directors have responsibility”

Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba Star Sunny Kaushal said that he too has very opposite views on the matter. He added, “I feel that films are fictional and you have to see them that way. When we grew up watching films in the 90s, there were a lot of toxic characters like Baazigar, And Darr. But that never influenced us. I never sat back and thought I want to become like that or take revenge like that or kill someone. So it’s also an individual responsibility to understand that it’s fiction, nobody is saying you should behave like that. A person has created their world and they say that’s how the character works in their world, that’s all, or they think like that. That’s all, it’s an entertainment thing. We individually also have a responsibility to know what is wrong and what is right. If we blame films, it sounds very stupid.”

Sunny Kaushal further said, “But at the same time, I believe that filmmakers have a certain responsibility. And I say this because I have played such a character in Choir Nikal Ke Bhaga. He is so disrespectful to men in the film that I remember discussing with my director that this guy should suffer. I wanted to see this character degenerate and die. The result will be satisfying for the audience to watch because I, as an audience member, will enjoy seeing this bad character get hurt. So there was no glorification of such characters anywhere.”
