Evansville celebrates 812 Day with a new city cleanup initiative

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Inspired by the date August 12, the Evansville City Council celebrated “812” Day.

This led to a series of events, including the launch of a new urban cleanup initiative: Block-by-Block.

For 812 Day, parts of the Jacobsville area were renovated.

This was the first day of Mayor Stephanie Terry’s new city cleanup initiative: Block-by-Block.

She says the goal is to target areas with higher crime or building code violations and give them a little help.

“Neighborhood revitalization is one of our top priorities as an administration and this was an opportunity for us to continue that and really get hands-on,” Terry said.

She worked with other city officials and volunteers to demolish an abandoned house, mow grass and trim trees.

She says the city is working to promote economic development, but they must not forget to improve the quality of life of the people who already live here.

She says she has met several people in her work and they have been grateful to see the efforts to improve the area.

“When we as a government can do our job and show them how taxpayers’ money is being used, it’s a good day,” Terry said.

Mayor Terry began the day by raising the new city flag in front of the Civic Center.

Other components of 812 Day include encouraging people to support local businesses, visit local parks and perform acts of kindness.

“It’s about taking care of people’s needs. Initiatives like this allow us to really connect and show people that we mean business. And we’re going to do everything we can to improve every neighborhood in this city,” Terry said.
