CHICAGO (WLS) — Estelle Long of Chicago, affectionately known as “Mama Long,” turned 104 on Tuesday.

The woman, born in 1920, can look back on a long list of successful achievements.

Sit down with Long for a moment and she will tell you one of her secrets for a long, happy life.

“I like to dance,” she said.

ABC7 met the grandmother of seven children and great-grandmother of 17 grandchildren for the first time six years ago.

Long told us why many call her the “real” Rosie the Riveter, an iconic symbol of women who worked in factories and shipyards to support the country during World War II. Hard work, feminism and patriotism are all things Long embodied while working on Douglas C54 cargo planes in Chicago.

“I sealed it so it wouldn’t leak,” Long said.

She also worked secretly on what we now know as radar.

“We didn’t tell anyone we were working there. It was just a known fact at the time. Everything was top secret,” Long said.

As one of only eight black students in her 1937 graduating class at John Marshall High School, she fought long for civil rights, eventually earning a master’s degree in public administration and retiring from the office of auditor after a 40-year career with the city.

Chicago celebrates Estelle Long on her 104th birthday.
