ESPN’s position analysis shows the Bengals’ running backs are a unit to watch

The Cincinnati Bengals have one of the most talented teams in the NFL.

Although the offensive line has been plagued with concerns in the preseason, the team is expected to be one of the few that can compete in the AFC. The Baltimore Ravens and Bengals are expected to be the two battling for the division.

When most non-Bengals fans think of the team, they immediately think of Cincinnati’s dynamic receiver group, led by Ja’Marr Chase. Joe Burrow is another player that immediately comes to mind for most as the reason for the Bengals’ success.

However, neither of them finished at the top of the NFL in ESPN’s Position Power Rankings, which were compiled by Mike Clay, who evaluated the best 16 units in each position group. The Bengals’ quarterback team was ranked No. 4. Their receiver team was also ranked No. 4.

Clay went through the best and then the shakiest phases and was also named a unit to keep an eye on. The Bengals just got a large portion of their running back room, which was named the unit to keep an eye on after ranking 30th among 32 NFL teams.

Here is Clay’s explanation.

“The Joe Mixon era is over, and the Bengals’ succession plan included signing Zack Moss as his ‘replacement.’ Moss – a 2020 third-round pick – certainly shined as a runner with the Bills and Colts, but he’s never handled a full workload for an entire season (career-high 183 carries in 2023) and has never handled a major load in the passing attack (career average 9.9 receiving yards per game). Second-year Chase Brown also shined last season, although the sample size was very small (58 touches). He could be the lead back and will be busy at least in passing situations,” Clay wrote.

For the Bengals, Moss and Brown handle most of the ball contact, while Trayveon Williams has yet to show in the regular season whether he can handle important ball contact.

There is no reason to believe that this group would not act as a committee.
