A delicious way to travel by high-speed train.

When you board the Shinkansen at Shin-Osaka Station in Japan, it can be difficult to resist the urge to buy some food for the journey, even if you’ve just eaten a full meal. For those occasions, our Osaka-born reporter Marie Morimoto recommends grabbing yourself the famous beef cutlet sandwich from Yokoowhich is conveniently located in the food court next to the waiting room near Shinkansen platforms 25 and 26.

The Osaka Noren Meguri food court has plenty of great options for those looking to grab a quick local treat before heading out of town, but Marie recommends heading straight to Yokoo in the back left.

▼ Yokoo is famous for its beef cutlet sandwich, which is more luxurious than most.

Marie recommends the small “Gyu Katsu Sando(“Beef Katsu Sandwich”), which is conveniently cut into four pieces and costs 1,180 yen (US$8.04).

The clerks here know that speed is a top priority for customers, and every time Marie stopped by Yokoo, she received her sandwich about three seconds after ordering. That happened again this time: The employee simply grabbed a package right next to the counter, quickly put it in a bag and handed it to her.

These packages are the store’s most popular product and are always available, so you don’t have to worry about missing your train. Once you take a seat on board, you can bask in the feeling of having just purchased one of the best sandwiches in town.

▼ Marie also recommends a mixed juice, another famous specialty from Osaka.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a sandwich with more meat anywhere, and although each portion costs 295 yen, the size and quality make it worth every penny.

Each piece of meat is incredibly soft and juicy, contrasting beautifully with the crispy fried exterior, sweet sauce, and pillowy soft bread.

The addition of the mustard enhances the flavor of the meat, giving the sandwich another delicious touch.

▼ Marie describes it as “the taste of happiness” and it is the perfect travel companion for a ride on the high-speed train.

So next time you’re looking for something tasty to enjoy while admiring the scenery from the Shinkansen out of Osaka, be sure to consider Yokoo. It’s fast, convenient and super tasty, and a healthier alternative to the city’s mind-blowing sumo cutlet sandwiches.
