Epic Games Store launches worldwide for Android and brings Fall Guys to the platform

Epic Games Store launches worldwide for Android and brings Fall Guys to the platform

Summary

  • The Epic Games Store is now available worldwide for Android and in the EU for iOS, offering Fortnite and two other games at launch.
  • Both Android and iOS EU users can scan a QR code to install the launcher on their respective devices.
  • Epic has the potential to improve the mobile gaming scene by adapting to the needs of gamers and filling a gap left by Google’s chaotic Play Store.

We knew this day would come when Epic would eventually bring its Games Store to Android, and thanks to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, iOS users in the EU can also join in on today’s fun. So far, there are only three games available, one of which is of course Fortnite, which is now finally back on iOS. Android users have been able to download the game through the Epic Games Launcher for some time, which should not be confused with today’s global release of the Epic Games Store on Android. Despite a confusing and long history filled with lawsuits and endless accusations, Epic is showing that it is ready to offer quality games for gamers.

What to expect from the Epic Games Store

Until today, you had to sideload the Epic Games Launcher to install Fortnite on Android, but now you have to sideload the Epic Games Store, a small but notable change. This new store includes three games: Fortnite, a mobile version of Fall Guys, and Rocket League Sideswipe (a side-scrolling mobile take on Rocket League that I love). There’s also an app called Postparty that lets you capture, save, and share your gaming moments.

Sure, this is a small selection of games and apps, but the selection is expected to grow over time, and it’s not like Fortnite couldn’t carry this store on its own, just like it did with the previous mobile launcher. Still, many are hoping that Epic has what it takes to improve the gaming scene on Android, as the Play Store is certainly a dumpster fire as far as discovery goes. Even though Epic is still in its infancy, there’s certainly room to dominate the market when it comes to offering mobile games that gamers actually want to play.

Things are a little different for iOS users. Only users in the EU can install the Epic Games Store and they need to scan a QR code on the website to do so. It seems that iOS users will need to be running iOS 17.6 or later to install the launcher.

All in all, if you’re an iOS user in the UK, today should be big news for you if you’re a Fortnite fan. For Android users, not much has changed other than the launcher that can be used to install Fortnite, but there’s definitely potential for exponential improvement. I’m sure many fear that Epic doesn’t have what it takes to run a worthwhile store after the many problems with its PC counterpart, but one thing is for sure: mobile desperately needs a section aimed at gamers and their needs, because Google’s efforts have been nothing but a disappointment.

Rocket League Sideswipe leaves the Play Store

Following the Epic Games Store announcement, Epic has revealed that Rocket League Sideswipe will be leaving the Play Store on August 23. Unsurprisingly, its new home will be the Epic Games Store, an exclusive. To entice players to install the Epic Games version, the company will be releasing a new Car Body variant, Diestro (Gold Trim), which will also be available in Fortnite. Players have until November 2 to log into the new EGS version of Sideswipe to unlock the reward. Those who log in today will receive a new title and avatar.
