After a lengthy absence, Fortnite has officially returned to iPhone and other Apple devices. The popular battle royale game, which was removed from the App Store in August 2020 due to a highly publicized dispute between Epic Games and Apple over app store policies and payment systems, is now available again. The move, which comes after a lengthy legal battle with Apple, marks Fortnite’s triumphant return to iOS devices in the region.
The launch of the Epic Games Store on iOS is a direct result of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires tech giants like Apple to allow alternative app stores on their platforms. This legislation has paved the way for more competition and more choice for consumers in the mobile app ecosystem.
“Today, the Epic Games Store is available for download on iPhones in the European Union and Android devices worldwide. The store launches with Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and the all-new Fall Guys on mobile, and we’re working to give all developers the ability to publish their games and apps through the Epic Games Store in the future. We’re also bringing our games to independent mobile stores today, including AltStore PAL,” Epic Games wrote in its blog post.
In addition to Fortnite, the Epic Games Store also offers other popular titles such as Rocket League Sideswipe and Fall Guys. While the store is currently limited to EU users, Epic has stated its intention to expand to other regions in the future.
