“Like Tom, I always have difficulty explaining to people the nature of our connection and relationship,” Emma wrote.

“We have loved each other in a very special way for more than 20 years and I have lost count of the number of times people have said to me: ‘You must have made out when you were drunk!’ ‘You must have kissed!’ ‘There must be something there!'”

“But we have a lot more to do,” Emma continued.

“It’s one of the purest loves I can imagine. We are soulmates and have always supported each other. I know it always will be that way.”

Emma further notes that she feels “emotional” when she thinks about how close her friendship with Tom is.

“Sometimes it’s hard to live in a world where people are so quick to judge, doubt and question intentions. Tom doesn’t do that,” Emma continued.

“I know he will understand that I meant well, even if I made a mistake. I know he will always believe me. Even if he doesn’t know everything, he will never doubt that I meant well and did my best. That is true friendship, and to be seen and loved like that is one of the greatest gifts of my life.”

Despite the close bond they share today, Tom reveals in the book that they didn’t get on well at first. He admits that he is still “ashamed” of the way he treated Emma, then nine years old, when she invited her co-stars to watch her dance in her dressing room.

“Our reaction was predictably negative,” he wrote. “We walked into Emma’s show giggling and the giggling got louder as she danced.

“We just acted badly, mostly out of discomfort and because we thought it would be cool to make fun of her, but Emma was visibly annoyed by our thoughtless reaction. I felt a bit like an idiot, and rightly so.”

He added: “I am glad that our friendship did not fail because of my insensitivity, but became something deeper. A touchstone for both of our lives.”
