Emily Blunt plans another reunion with Dwayne Johnson

Emily Blunt is expected to have another reunion with her “Jungle Cruise” co-star Dwayne Johnson.

Blunt, who starred alongside Johnson in the 2021 Disney film, is reportedly in talks to appear in “The Smashing Machine,” which focuses on the life of mixed martial arts champion Mark Kerr.

According to Variety, Blunt is set to play Kerr’s wife Dawn Staples, who “struggles to find her place in Mark’s chaotic and contradictory world.”

Johnson will play Kerr. The film will follow “the legendary MMA fighter from the UFC’s no-holds-barred era at the peak of his career” and document his “battle with addiction, winning, love and friendship in 2000.”

“The Smashing Machine” is directed by Benny Safdie, who starred with Blunt in “Oppenheimer.” The new project was created in 2019 while talks between Johnson and the director were ongoing.

While The Smashing Machine was shelved, Blunt encouraged Johnson to make the film a few years later after seeing a documentary about Kerr. The documentary was about her and Safdie’s time together at Oppenheimer, during which Safdie was urged to reconnect with Johnson.

“Dwayne and Benny are unique talents and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying,” A24’s Noah Sacco previously said. “We are deeply honored that they trust us as partners to bring this incredibly special project to life.”

The renewed collaboration comes after Johnson and Blunt were confirmed as producers on Amazon’s Kate Warne, which has also nominated the actress for the lead role.

The story is about the real-life police officer who broke new ground as the first female U.S. detective at the Pinkerton Agency.

Filming for “The Smashing Machine” will begin this summer, but a release date has not yet been set.
