ELKINS – The Elkins High School boys soccer team scored two second-half goals to earn a 2-0 win over Braxton County in its season opener at Tiger Stadium on Wednesday night.

Tristan Whited and Tucker Cutright scored for the Tigers after the break.

“The boys have had a great start to the season,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said, “We didn’t get a chance to play a practice game last week, so this was our first real action.”

“We started a little slow in the first half, but we turned it around in the second half. I was really proud of our performance and our ability to defend well enough to get a shutout.”

The Tigers travel to South Harrison next Wednesday.

Late in Wednesday’s game, Addy Cogar scored a hat trick to help the Elkins girls to a 9-0 victory over Braxton County.

Ziah George scored two goals, while Maddie Belan, Darby Bailey, Haylie Doyle and Lilly Doyle each scored one.

In their season debut, the Lady Tigers also scored all their goals in the first half.

“The girls played really well tonight,” EHS coach Scott Cutright said, “We started fast with two goals in three minutes and kept the ball moving purposefully for the rest of the half.”

“It was great to see how everything got rolling and we look forward to it continuing just as quickly throughout the rest of the season.”

Elkins entertains Hampshire on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
