East Liverpool inducts 10 players into HOF | News, Sports, Jobs



EAST LIVERPOL — Tickets for the upcoming East Liverpool High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony are available through Tuesday at Tri-State Supply and Bob & Robin’s Flowers in East Liverpool. Tickets are $30 and include a breakfast brunch and access to all ceremony events. The ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 in the auditorium.

The new additions include:

Jim Tice (Class of 1954) — Jim Tice is considered by many to be one of the greatest contributors to baseball in the East Liverpool area, having served as a coach, director and umpire. Jim was instrumental in the founding and leadership of many area baseball leagues and organizations, such as the Thorobred Baseball League, Columbiana County Baseball League and East Liverpool Old Timers Association, and he was a pioneer in the development of travel baseball. Jim spent countless hours coaching, umpiring, fundraising and groundskeeping to support the youth of our community. Jim was also honored by a neighboring school, Beaver Local, by being inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame for his contributions to local youth sports.

Lou Volino (Class of 1970) — Lou Volino is widely regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in ELHS history. A three-year letterman, he anchored the 1969 team that finished 7-2. Lou was named First Team All-County, team MVP, honorable mention All-State, and received the 1969 Bill Booth Award. Lou was selected to East Liverpool’s all-time football team as a first team offensive guard and continued his football career at Miami (Ohio) University. Lou also coached and taught in the East Liverpool system for many years before becoming a successful business owner in the area.

Chuck Harris (Class of 1968) — Chuck Harris is one of the greatest football players in Potter history. He was selected to the All-Ohio first team in the 1967 season and is considered one of the toughest players of his era in the entire Potter football program. Chuck is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players of all time in the blue and white. He was captain of the 1968 team as a defensive end on a team full of talent and exceptional athletes. He was selected to the Potter team’s first team all-time defense and his performances earned him various local and regional awards.

Lindsay Baker (Class of 2017) — Lindsay Baker is widely considered one of the most talented and accomplished track and field athletes in Potter history. Lindsay is the school record holder in the shot put and discus and has also broken several local meet records including the Bellaire Relays, Brooke Invitational and Golden Bear Invitational. She is a three-time Buckeye 8 champion and record holder, OVAC champion, two-time Columbiana County champion and most notably an Ohio Division II district and regional champion who rose to #1 in Ohio with a third-place finish at the state meet in the discus while also becoming the state champion in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 8.5 inches. Lindsay continued her athletic career at both Ashland University and Ohio State University, earning numerous All-American honors while placing second at the U.S. Track and Field Championships and finishing sixth in the world at the IAAF World Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Tony Metsch (Class of 2007) – Tony Metsch is a notable multi-sport athlete for the Potters, excelling in track and football while also leading the basketball team. In track, Tony is a four-year performer, setting the school record with 232 total points scored (surpassing former Olympian Aric Long’s record set in 1988) while also breaking the record in the 800-meter dash en route to multiple OVAC championships in events such as the 3200-meter relay and high jump. On the football field, Tony holds the record with 44 catches in a season and was selected to the Ohio All-Second Team, the MAC Conference First Team and All-Review. On the court, Tony was a three-year performer and team captain, being selected to the Region First Team, the District Second Team and the David Hoffman Scholarship.

Austin Mayfield (Class of 2017) — Named the starting quarterback of the All-Time Potter football team, Austin Mayfield excelled in both football and wrestling as a four-year letterman in both sports. On the football field, Austin was selected to the All-Ohio second team and also made the Ohio Division IV Eastern District and All-OVAC first team. Austin holds four Potter football records, including most passing yards in a single game (304), most passing yards in a season (1,715), most passing yards in a career (2,861) and most offensive yards in a season (2,147). On the wrestling mat, he is East Liverpool’s fourth all-time leader with 132 wins. He was the 2017 sectional champion and earned three berths in the OVAC tournament. He is the recipient of the Bill Booth Award for football and the Lou Vendetti Award for wrestling. He continued his athletic career at West Liberty University as a quarterback, linebacker and punter and was named All-MEC.

Eric DiAgosta (Class of 2007) — Eric DiAgosta is one of the most successful wrestlers in Potter history. He excelled as a heavyweight and also excelled on the football field. As a wrestler, he was named All-Area and All-OVAC Wrestler of the Year and placed third at the OHSAA Division II State Championships. He finished his career with 113 total wins, which ranks him seventh all-time at East Liverpool. He was 46-2 his senior year. On the football field, he was selected to the All-OVAC and All-Area first team. Known for his brute strength, Eric received several NCAA Div. I scholarship offers but eventually continued his athletic career at Ohio State University.

Joey Cilone (Class of 2014) — One of Potter’s all-time great golfers, Joey Cilone was named All-OVAC, All-Eastern District and All-Area three times as a four-year letterman. His teams were district champions and qualified for state in both his junior and senior seasons, finishing sixth and second, respectively. In his final round at North Star in Columbus, Joey shot a tournament-low 73 to lead his team to a second-place finish. As a Potter athlete, he won several tournament medals and eventually earned an athletic scholarship to continue his athletic career at West Liberty University.

Nikayla Edgell (Class of 2015) — Nikayla Edgell is considered one of the most talented basketball players to ever wear a Potters uniform. She is the East Liverpool basketball team’s all-time leading scorer with 1,380 points and holds the career record for three-pointers made (216). She also holds the season record for three-pointers in a game (9), three-pointers in a season (119), points in a season (550), points in a game (43) and assists in a season (162). Nikayla was a two-time All-Ohio selection and was named Columbiana County Player of the Year twice. In addition, she was named All-District 5, All-OVAC, All-County, All-AP Eastern District multiple times and was named the 2015 National Guard Player of the Year. Nikayla continued her athletic career at LaRoche University and later founded the New Level Basketball Academy in her hometown. She is currently the head coach of the women’s basketball team at the NCAA Division II program at Salem University in West Virginia.

Justin Campbell (Class of 2003) — Justin Campbell is one of the most successful multi-sport athletes in East Liverpool history. He excels on track and also leads the Potters on the football and basketball courts. On track, Justin was a four-year performer, qualifying for state championships and placing 13th in the 1600 meter run. He won several local and regional races in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters and was a member of the East Liverpool record-holding 3200 meter relay team. He held the junior high 1600 meter county record for over 20 years and was the Columbiana County MVP his senior year. On the football field, he was a team captain and winner of the Bill Booth Award while leading the team in rushing and touchdowns on his way to being named All-Review, All-OVAC, All-Eastern District and being selected for the prestigious Scholar-Athlete award from the North Eastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation. On the field, he was captain of the Elite 8 team and was selected to play in the county all-star game. His most notable action on the field was when he stole the ball from Lebron James. Justin received an athletic scholarship to compete in track and cross country at Miami (Ohio) University and later earned his Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati. After managing independent pharmacies for a number of years, he transitioned into the hospital field. For over a decade, Justin has been the System Director for outpatient pharmacy services at UC Health in Cincinnati.
