DPS soldier and Air Force veteran honored for life-saving efforts in Dalhart crash

AUSTIN, Texas (KFDA) – Amarillo DPS Trooper Bryan Peña and U.S. Air Force veteran Brandon Johnson were recognized at a Public Safety Commission meeting in Austin for their heroic actions during a Dalhart crash on March 13, 2024.

On March 13, Trooper Peña responded to a two-vehicle accident in Dallam County. When he arrived, he found a woman with a severe arm injury.

Air Force veteran Brandon Johnson had arrived at the scene before Trooper Peña and had covered the woman’s injured arm with a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Trooper Peña determined that a second tourniquet was needed to help the injured woman. Peña remained calm and reassured the injured woman while the second tourniquet was applied. The second tourniquet was able to stop the bleeding until EMS arrived.

In recognition of their heroic, life-saving actions, Trooper Peña received the Lifesaving Award and Brandon Johnson received the Director’s Award.

“These awards recognize some of the most selfless acts of heroism in Texas,” said Director McCraw. “The stories of the individuals recognized this morning showcase just a small portion of the passion that Texans – both inside and outside the department – have for keeping the people of our state safe. We are truly fortunate to see such a remarkable group of people making a difference in their communities.”
