Door County ranked 117th in the study conducted by HonestEco.org, a Florida-based eco-travel company, which surveyed 3,000 families to determine the most desirable alternative travel destination in the country.

The study authors said of Door County:

This picturesque peninsula offers charming towns, beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. Families can explore lighthouses, hike the trails and enjoy the beaches, providing a rich and diverse coastal experience.

The top Wisconsin location, ranked 13th in the U.S., was the Milwaukee Art Museum. The website states:

This impressive museum has an extensive art collection and hosts changing exhibitions. The architecture of the museum, with its wing-like sunshade, is an attraction in itself. Exploring the art exhibits and iconic architecture offers a rich and artistic experience.

Geographically located between Door County and Milwaukee, two destinations made the list: Horicon Marsh at number 65 and Kettle Moraine State Forest at number 121.

The description of Horicon Marsh:

This area is one of the largest freshwater marshes in the United States and offers excellent birdwatching, canoeing, and hiking. Families can explore the marsh and view the diverse wildlife, providing a rich and varied outdoor experience.

And the Kettle Moraine State Forest:

This forest features rolling hills, dead ice lakes and hiking trails. Families can hike, bike and explore the unique glacial landscape, providing a rich and varied outdoor experience.

The Makapu’u tide pools in Hawaii took first place in the study, followed by the Channel Islands National Park in California and the Hoh Rainforest (Olympic National Park) in Washington State.
