Documentary about Greg Maddux’s life and career tells a unique story

Atlanta Braves fans will have a chance to reminisce when “One of Kind,” which tells the story of Hall of Fame starting pitcher Greg Maddux, airs Sunday night at 8 p.m. EST on MLB Network.

I had the opportunity to see the film in advance, and as someone who didn’t live through his career – he retired when I was young and was inducted into the Hall of Fame when I was in high school – it was fascinating to hear the story of his career told by Maddux and those who were able to see it.

I’ve seen the stats and highlights, I’ve heard the phrase “throwing a Maddux” many times, and I’ve heard the joke about him painting a house but only painting the corners a dozen times – a very clever joke, by the way.

But getting the interviews and the background of his upbringing and hearing the stories from the clubhouse is a whole different experience. Well, they told what they wanted to tell on TV – and even then they managed to push the boundaries. In an attempt not to give the story away to first-time viewers, be prepared to be surprised a few times, but rest assured, you will laugh and be entertained.

It was indeed a “unique” story about one of the most talked about players in baseball history. The Vegas aesthetic, paying tribute to the city where he spent part of his childhood and still lives today, was a nice touch.

Longtime Braves fans will feel a pang of nostalgia as the legendary rotation of the 1990s – Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz – sit together and talk about the glory days.

One of the best moments of the show is when Barry Bonds comes on the show. It’s nice to see Bonds getting some recognition. It’s obvious why we haven’t seen much of him in these MLB specials, but we’re at a point where a large portion of baseball fans are now more nostalgic about his career. There’s currently a public call to induct him into the Hall of Fame. That would have been unthinkable in 2007. Times change.

For those who enjoy checking out the big guys, listening to Maddux and Bonds discuss the finer points of their pairings is a special moment.

If there was one additional detail to this document, it would be that they contributed more to the discussion of whether Maddux or Bonds would join the Atlanta Braves in 1993. This is mentioned briefly in the document before logically moving on to Maddux’s signing with the Braves.

The reason I wanted to see more is because Bonds could have been a Braves a few times. There were almost a trade with the pirates before the 1992 season. There was obviously another possibility because they even mentioned there was a big contract and it would have been either Bonds or Maddux. It would have just been nice to get Bonds’ thoughts on the whole thing with Maddux being part of the context.

But if that’s the biggest criticism, a lot of things were done right. “One of Kind” is an entertaining film for baseball fans, full of tidbits and highlights from start to finish. If you want to continue the journey down memory lane, you can watch a segment about a dominant performance by Maddux after the documentary.

“One of a Kind” airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on the MLB Network.
