Do the Phoenix Suns have the right big men for the NBA?

Do the Phoenix Suns have the right big men for the NBA?

Devin Booker is our most important player, and Book has always played better with a solid big man, since the Kentucky days with Karl-Anthony Towns. So we’ve been working on our center position this season.

Let’s start with the Phoenix Suns’ new player, Mason Plumlee. He spent the majority of the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, playing 69 games for them and posting a stat line of 57/0/70. Plumlee’s 5.1 rebounds per game is a huge asset to the Phoenix Suns and their current roster. Mason is also a talented ball handler.

As the main backup to Jusuf Nurkić, Mason has the tools and can do the job with the right support. So does he have the right support? Let’s get to the bottom of this.

Kevin Durant is my favorite player of all time. He does things on the court that are just unimaginable sometimes. He is one of the most versatile players I have seen since “Magic” Johnson. Not only can KD score, but he can play most positions. We’ve seen him get bullied by bigger guys like Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokić in the past when he played at the 5, but when needed, Durant is a guy who can step into that role. Man I love @KDTrey5.

Enter Bol Bol.

This guy had an incredible season last year and has earned a place in our hearts. When Bol signed with the Suns, we all thought it was a ploy, nothing more than an attraction. And hell yeah, we were proven wrong.

Sudanese Jesus came out last season and shot 61/42/79 while also posting 3.2 blocks per game. He had the opportunity to shine and grow in Phoenix, and his friendship with Kevin Durant has only enhanced his skills on the court. Still, he’s the third option at No. 5 in a crucial scenario. Bol Bol has the fifth-longest wingspan on the list of active NBA players at a whopping 7’7″.

He is also so fast.

Our last 7-footer is our starting center and my main man, “The Bosnian Beast” Jusuf Nurkić. No doubt about it. Why not? Nurkić has brought a passion and dedication to his position that I haven’t seen in a long time as a Suns fan, going from being a simple “big man” on our roster to having the second-highest screen assist points in the NBA (per 36 this season with at least 50 games played and 2000 total minutes played) with a 12.9. Nurkić was narrowly eclipsed by Domantas Sabonis with 14.1.

Nevertheless, it was a fantastic season for Nurkić.

With 31 rebounds, he took over the Phoenix Suns franchise record for most rebounds in a game, surpassing the previous record of 27 set by Tyson Chandler in 2016. These are the things we forget to give Nurkić his flowers for.

Are we overpaying for Jusuf Nurkić? Probably, but he’s our big man in the middle. He looks like he’s lost weight and looks pretty good in the gym. His game can only improve and grow. Then throw Tyus Jones into the mix and I’d watch those numbers closely.

So, taking those four reasons together, I’m confident in our big man rotation as it stands now. As always, only time will tell… Go Suns!
