DNC 2024: Democrats meet for second day in Chicago

President Joe Biden’s deteriorating health, which was clearly evident during his debate against Donald Trump in July, continues to draw criticism.

Biden delivered the closing speech on the first day of the DNC in Chicago on Monday. His address was delayed for hours and did not end until after midnight. Many observers argued that it was disrespectful of the Democrats to move the President of the United States from his primetime broadcast to the late night hours.

Nevertheless, in his speech, Biden passed the torch to Vice President Kamala Harris and also acknowledged her achievements in office. He also addressed the widespread anti-Israel protests that took place outside the Chicago venue, saying the protesters “are right.”

“It’s possible, depending on Biden’s true capabilities, that he should have resigned and Harris should already be president – which would likely have put her in a better position to win the election than her current honeymoon does,” New York Times columnist Ross Douthat wrote in a recent Saturday column.

Ross even predicted that Biden may face a serious health crisis in the coming months, arguing that Democrats would then wish Biden had resigned rather than just given up his candidacy for re-election.

Reports have emerged suggesting that some of President Biden’s closest advisers and family members have worked to conceal the true nature of Biden’s physical and cognitive deficits.

After appearing at a fundraiser with former President Barack Obama in June, Democrats expressed concern that people close to the president were trying to downplay concerns about his health, according to CNN.

Shortly before Biden officially dropped out of the race for re-election, the president canceled a speaking engagement in Las Vegas due to concerns about his COVID diagnosis at the time. According to local reports, local police and staff at a nearby trauma center were preparing for the president’s arrival. However, the president never made it to the hospital and, according to a letter from Biden’s doctor, the president continued to go about his daily duties despite mild COVID symptoms.

Many critics of Biden’s health assumed that preparations by hospital staff and police proved that the president had faced a medical incident during his stay in Las Vegas and was therefore unable to speak. But Andrew Bates, deputy White House press secretary and deputy assistant to the president, called speculation that Biden had suffered a medical emergency during his trip to Las Vegas “100% false.”

Since Biden announced on July 21 that he would not run for re-election, he has held only six public events, according to his publicly available schedule.
