Dickson Quarterback Club raffles off car as gift from 9-year-old hero and his family

DICKSON, Okla. (KXII) – Saturday’s dreary weather and scattered rain showers couldn’t dampen the Dickson Quarterback Club’s first annual charity car and motorcycle show – at least not immediately.

“It was a really big event, there were a lot of people here and there were a lot of hamburgers and hot dogs,” said Ricky Peoples, president of the Dickson Quarterback Club. “It was a great time until the rain started.”

Over 60 classics competed for the title of “Best Overall Winner” and all proceeds benefit the Dickson football program.

“Coaches can come in and say, ‘We have a player who needs a little help with the cleats or some other type of equipment, and we can help him with that,'” Peoples said.

The Quarterback Club is also giving away a 2016 Ford Fusion with ties to a very special member of the Dickson community.

“To have something like this come our way to raise money for the football program was great,” Peoples said.

When a tornado swept through Dickson in May, 9-year-old Branson Baker and his family were trapped in their truck.

Debris crushed the front of the truck and blocked most of the doors.

But Branson’s parents were hurt and so he took action.

Thanks to his quick reactions, Branson was able to escape the truck and run over a mile through rain and lightning to get help.

“Branson is just a very special story,” said Matt Suffal, Dickson’s athletic director. “He came in and did exactly what he had to do to protect his family, even though he was still young.”

After the tornado, Valero reached out to the Baker family to give them a new car.

But the Baker family decided to donate the car to the Quarterback Club instead.

“This is super important for this group,” Peoples said. “We can create some excitement, do some things, get people involved, get the community involved.”

The car will be raffled off at halftime of the Dickson Comets’ first home game on August 30th – and the circle will come full circle when Branson announces the winner.

“We’re actually letting Branson draw the winning ticket for the car, so it’s going to be really cool,” Peoples said.

Raffle tickets are $10 and anyone wishing to purchase a ticket or donate to the program can contact the Dickson Quarterback Club directly.
