Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte is on the injured list after a severe ankle sprain

MIAMI (AP) — After spending eight days on the injured list due to a sprained ankle, Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte was activated from the active roster on Monday.

The Diamondbacks placed Marte on the 10-day injured list before the start of their three-game series in Miami.

30-year-old Marte first injured the ankle against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 10. Garrett Stubs of the Phillies rolled into him a headfirst slide at second base.

Marte had to miss three games before aggravating his injury while pinch-hitter. against Tampa Bay on SundayHe was the designated hitter on Saturday, hitting a single and a walk in four plate appearances against the Rays.

“Ketel needs some time off,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday. “He tried to play through it and only aggravated his ankle sprain. Hopefully it will be as short as possible.”

Marte entered Monday ranked third in the National League with 30 home runs and 81 RBIs in 116 games, the fifth-best total. His offensive output helped Arizona to a 69-56 record, one game behind San Diego for the first NL wild-card spot.

“Nobody knows Ketel’s exact history,” Lovullo said. “We thought he was healthy. He showed signs of being healthy. He was training very intensely. We talked about the power he was generating and that’s what got him.”

The Diamonds are 28-13 since the beginning of July, but lost to the Rays in three games before Monday’s series in Miami.

Marte has returned to Arizona and Lovullo does not expect him to need further testing.

“He just needs a little time,” Lovullo said.

The Diamondbacks have recalled Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno to take Marte’s spot on the roster.
