The Detroit Tigers could be missing one of their most important rookies.

Wenceel Pérez, a 24-year-old outfielder, left Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park before the end of the fourth inning and was replaced by Bligh Madris.

Pérez left the game due to a hardening in the left abdominal area.

The severity of the injury is unknown.

Before leaving, Pérez struck out in the fourth inning. In his second duel with Giants left-hander Robbie Ray, he struck out only one of the six pitches. In the second inning, he also managed a walk after five pitches – without hitting any of those pitches.

Pérez, a switch-hitter with a contact-first profile, has a .242 batting average with nine home runs, 27 walks and 76 strikeouts in 97 games during the 2024 season and an OPS of .684. In his last 15 games, he has a .143 batting average with four walks and 13 strikeouts.

It is the first season of Pérez’s MLB career.

In Friday’s game, Pérez got a rare start in center field. Coming off his injury, Madris came in as a right fielder while Ryan Vilade moved from right field to center field.
