Detroit man receives second life sentence for kidnapping and murder of Wynter Cole-Smith

A Detroit man will begin serving a double life sentence in July 2023 for the kidnapping and murder of a Lansing toddler.

On Friday, a federal judge sentenced 27-year-old Rashad Trice to life in prison for the death of 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith.

Trice was previously sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on August 16 for first-degree premeditated murder and sexual abuse.

In July 2023, during an argument over money, Trice attacked his ex-girlfriend, stabbed her, and then drove away with her daughter Wynter.

Although he is not Wynter’s biological father, according to the FBI, Trice is the father of Cole-Smith’s one-year-old brother, who was left unharmed in the apartment.

The 27-year-old attempted to flee from police who had spotted his car in St. Clair Shores on July 3, 2023, but collided with a police car.

He was eventually arrested after attempting to disarm a police officer.

However, Wynter was not with him.

According to U.S. Attorney Mark Totten, officials found the 2-year-old’s body in a Detroit alley on July 5, 2023, strangled with a pink phone charging cord.

Trice denied taking the toddler, but pieces of the pink charging cord used to kill Cole-Smith were found in his car, FBI officials said.

He also texted his uncle, “I have to put a stop to this,” while an Amber Alert was active for the two-year-old.

Eight months later, on March 21, Trice pleaded guilty in federal court to kidnapping resulting in death.

“Nothing can bring Wynter back, but I hope her loved ones can find some comfort in knowing that Mr. Trice will spend the rest of his life behind bars without the need for a lengthy trial,” said Attorney General Dana Nessel. “Thanks to the tireless work of law enforcement and prosecutors in my office, the man responsible for these horrific acts will never endanger our communities again.”

In addition to the two life sentences, Trice will be placed on Michigan’s sex offender registry.
