(CBS) – A Detroit man faces charges in connection with the shooting death of a 7-year-old boy last month.
According to the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office, 22-year-old Antwon Tyree Williams is charged with assault with intent to cause serious injury, discharge of a firearm in a building causing injury, negligent discharge of a firearm causing injury and three counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.
He was arraigned on August 7 and held on $100,000 cash or surety bond.
Inkster police were called to a residence in the 400 block of Tobin Drive on July 15 for a shooting. Officers found the 7-year-old boy inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Prosecutors allege Williams had a gun in his hand when the shot went off and struck the child. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
“This is another case of a child being shot in a home where a gun was present. We tried pretty much everything to prevent this from happening. The adults failed this child,” District Attorney Kym Worthy said in a statement.
A hearing to determine whether there is sufficient suspicion of guilt is scheduled for August 21.
