Detroit Lions officially activate DJ Reader from PUP injury list

Detroit Lions officially activate DJ Reader from PUP injury list

DJ Reader is coming, folks.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions announced they had activated Reader from the physically unable to perform list after he passed the team’s medical exam. Reader has missed all of the Lions’ training camp as he continues to recover from a torn quadriceps suffered in December.

This means that Reader is officially off the roster and must be part of the 53-man roster when the Lions trim their roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Of course, this also means he will be eligible to play and practice immediately. Had he remained on the PUP list at the start of the year, he would have automatically missed the first four games of the season.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Reader will be fully ready for the opening game against the Los Angeles Rams in two weeks. He will have to spend the next 14 days preparing himself physically and mentally. As coach Dan Campbell emphasized, he will need some time to prepare once he returns to practice.

“I think we’ll use Reader from the start as well and just work him into individual (drills),” Campbell said last week.

This is obviously great news for the Lions. Reader was one of their biggest free agency signings this offseason, and the eight-year veteran has long been considered one of the best nose tackles in football. This could be great news for his supporting cast, including Alim McNeill, Levi Onwuzurike and Aidan Hutchinson.

“He’s a great player and will bring a lot to our defense,” Lions manager Brad Holmes said in March. “He will improve a lot of other things as well.”

This is also a big win for Reader himself. He stated a few weeks ago that his personal goal was to be removed from the PUP list before the start of the season.

Congratulations to Reader for achieving this goal!
