DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office releases statement on escapee

DESOTO CO., Mississippi (WMC) – The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office said it has resolved an issue that led to Joshua Zimmerman’s escape in Hernando two months ago.

Officials made this statement:

“We cannot comment on any matters related to Ronnie Hunt or the escape. The investigation and its results are under the jurisdiction and control of MBI/AG Fitch,” the Desoto County Sheriff’s Office said. “The vulnerabilities exposed by Zimmerman’s escape have been addressed and we have implemented additional security measures that we will not make public for obvious security reasons.”

Ronnie Hunt, the prison guard accused of helping Zimmerman escape, is no longer on the roster at the Lafayette County Jail where he was being held over the weekend.

There are still many questions about what role Hunt played in Zimmerman’s escape.

Hunt is charged with escape and transporting items that assisted in prisoner escape.

In Zimmerman’s booking photo from the Chicago Police Department, he has a smaller beard than in some of the last pictures we saw of him, the day of his escape two months ago.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Attorney General’s Office are currently investigating the case.

Zimmerman was arrested again last week after barricading himself in the Chicago restaurant where he worked.

Zimmerman faces charges in multiple states, including attempted murder in Mississippi, murder in Texas and several other charges in Connecticut.

In June, Desoto County Sheriff Thomas Tuggle III insisted that Zimmerman had no help in his escape and that Zimmerman took advantage of a flaw in the building’s construction to escape.

Zimmerman is scheduled to appear in court in Chicago in September, but it is not known where he will have to go first to face charges filed in other states.
