MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – With just 84 days until the general election, both the Mobile County Democratic and Republican parties are preparing for the home stretch by opening their respective party headquarters to the public.
The Mobile County Democratic Party officially opened its doors at 958 Dauphin Street on Monday. According to Chairman Ben Harris, the headquarters will initially be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended hours on weekends as Election Day approaches.
“It’s a great place for local voters to get information,” Harris explained. “If they’re interested in signs to support a particular campaign, they can do that. There are also buttons and other campaign paraphernalia.”
The Mobile County Republican Party is opening its headquarters in the next few weeks. It will be located at 3964 Airport Boulevard Suite C in the Pinebrook Shopping Center. Tricia Strange, chair of the Mobile County Republican Party, says the opening was originally planned for October, but due to increased interest in the party, that date has been moved up.
“We have so many people wanting to volunteer at headquarters. I’ve been working with our leasing agent to move the date up,” Strange said.
Both parties need volunteers to staff their headquarters.
“If people are having trouble voting, one of the things they can do is call our headquarters,” Harris said. “We need people to answer the phones, and we offer a little training to help resolve those issues. We’re looking for people to go out and knock on doors and take our campaign message to neighborhoods.”
“We have a number of options, from our door-to-door canvassing, where we have about 75 people who volunteer, unpaid, to spread information about our candidates on the streets and in the neighborhoods,” Strange said.
Volunteers for the Democratic Party must undergo training and volunteers for the Republican Party must pass a background check.
