Last week, our sports community lost a familiar face and lifelong friend with the passing of Ed Daniels.

Ed Daniels served as the voice of amateur and professional sports for nearly five decades, most recently as sports director at WGNO-TV. He was also a regular contributor to Crescent City Sports, The Clarion Herald, radio, podcasts and television. He was especially known as the creator and co-host of the popular prep shows Friday Night Football, Friday Night Fastball and Friday Night Sports. His commitment to sharing our local stories endeared him to generations of players, parents, administrators and fans throughout our community.

As a tribute to Ed and his legacy of service to our community, all local high school football programs are invited to wear a commemorative decal with the word “ED” and a microphone on their helmet, symbolizing Ed Daniels as the voice of local athletes and our community. The purple background represents WGNO’s logo color and Daniels’ non-athletic pastime – riding in the Krewe of Endymion each year, traditionally held next to the Delgado campus.

With support from the Louisiana High School Athletic Association and the Louisiana High School Coaches Association, Delgado Community College and Crescent City Sports have partnered to present 5,000 stickers to local programs to be worn by college players throughout Southeast Louisiana during Week 1 of the prep football season, Sept. 5-7.

Joe Scheuermann, athletic director and head coach of the Delgado baseball team, said, “Ed Daniels was a tireless advocate for local sports, especially our local athletes. We hope this small gesture reminds us of Ed’s tremendous legacy and impact on our local schools and the entire community as we remember the many lives he touched this season and beyond.”

Eddie Bonine, executive director of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA), added, “Ed Daniels was a pioneer in recognizing and promoting high school sports. He was a professional and a true reporter who loved covering sports in our great state. He will be missed, but his legendary career will never be forgotten.”

Eric Held, director of the Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA), noted, “Ed Daniels was a great human being who loved sports, especially prep sports, and was passionate about providing exceptional coverage of schools, their communities, and players and coaches. The relationships he built with coaches through Friday Night Football, Friday Night Fastball, Crescent City Sports and other media outlets are immeasurable. Ed will be missed!”

Distribution of stickers will begin next week. For more information, schools can contact Lenny Vangilder, vice president at Crescent City Sports ([email protected]), or Tyler Scheuermann, sports communications coordinator at Delgado Community College ([email protected]).
