DeKalb County 11-year-old shot by his mother buried after emotional funeral

Family and friends wept as they gathered Saturday to remember 11-year-old Makenzie B. The young girl was shot and killed by her mother in what DeKalb County police called a murder-suicide.

Makenzie’s family is still unsure how 31-year-old Qiana Rainley shot her daughter in an apartment complex near the intersection of Hambrick and Rockbridge Road and then turned the gun on herself.

“That was Auntie’s baby. My twin. The love of my life. I could say a lot, but I will say I’m devastated,” said a family member during the funeral. “And a lot of questions. But they say you shouldn’t question God.”

Although it hurts, the family vowed to remember how much good Makenzie brought to so many people’s lives in such a short time.

“Most of you who knew her knew she was crazy about fashion,” said Christian, Makenzie’s brother. “She loves being around people. She loves to have fun. And most importantly, she considers every single person in that room to be her brother and sister.”

Makenzie’s father summed up the family’s bittersweet farewell with a memory: “She will never be forgotten because I look at each and every one of you and I see Makenzie in each and every one of you.”
