Michelle Obama tells the DNC that her parents were ‘suspicious’ of the rich despite having a $70 million fortune themselves
Michelle Obama said during her speech on the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday that her parents were “suspicious of people who take more than they need.”
However, critics were quick to point out that she conveniently failed to mention that the Obamas own an estimated net worth of $70 million and luxury properties in Chicago, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Washington, DC.
The former First Lady began her speech to the Democratic Caucus by saying that the last time she was in her hometown of Chicago was to remember her mother, the woman “who showed me the importance of hard work, humility and decency” and “who raised my moral compass and showed me the power of my own voice.”
“She and my father didn’t aspire to be rich. In fact, they were suspicious of people who took more than they needed,” Michelle Obama said. “They understood that it wasn’t enough for their children to thrive when everyone else around us was drowning. So my mother volunteered at the local school.”
Her mother “always looked after the other kids in the neighborhood” and “rejoiced in doing the thankless, unglamorous work that has strengthened the fabric of this nation for generations,” Michelle Obama continued. “The belief that when you do good to others, you love your neighbor. If you work and scratch and make sacrifices, it will pay off. If not for you, then maybe for your children or grandchildren.”
“You see, these values were passed down through family farms and factory towns, through tree-lined streets and crowded tenements, through prayer groups and National Guard units and social studies classes. These were the values my mother instilled in me until her last breath,” she said. “Kamala Harris and I built our lives on the same core values. Although our mothers grew up an ocean apart, they shared the same belief in the promise of this country.”
An X-user who goes by the name “ProudArmyBrat” denounced the perceived hypocrisy to her more than 463,600 followers.
“The Obamas have a net worth of $70 million. They own 4 luxury properties: – House in Washington DC purchased for $8.1 million – House on Martha’s Vineyard purchased for $11.75 million – Beachfront house in Hawaii purchased for $8.7 million – House in Chicago purchased for $1.65 million,” she wrote. “I’m really sick of multimillionaires preaching about the evils of money and greed.”
