Daniel Kelly’s transfer deadline at Celtic confirmed, Millwall boss explains deal

Millwall boss Neil Harris has confirmed that a deal has been completed to sign Daniel Kelly from Celtic.

The promising young midfielder’s contract with the Hoops expires in December and he will then join the English Championship when the transfer window opens in January. Brendan Rodgers wanted the 18-year-old to stay in Glasgow and talks were held over a new contract, but no agreement could be reached.

Kelly had previously attracted interest from Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham and Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen, but will instead move to London and the English second division. Harris is proud to have signed the new signing and sees huge potential in the Scottish U19 star.

He said: “Dan has agreed to join the club. A contract has been agreed and he has signed. He officially joins us in January and is a young player who fits in the mould of Romain, Aidomo and Alfie and who we believe has great potential. The board wants us to be that football club. The football club wants to develop.”

“We want to sign younger players. Jimmy wants me to give younger players a chance, like I did last season, like I did in the past with Fred (Onyedinma), with Aiden (O’Bien), Ben Thompson, Jed Wallace, George Saville and Jake Cooper.”

He went into detail about what he sees in Kelly, continuing: “He’s a very good player and when Dan first walks into the building, everyone is not going to expect him to be on the team right away.

“He is obviously very young but everyone should take comfort in the fact that we saw a very young Alfie Massey make his debut tonight and that was an outstanding performance. Dan is a box-to-box midfielder, probably an old-fashioned number eight, who has a lot of energy.

“Personally, I would like him to be like the young George Saville when George first came to the football club. He breaks into the box and scores goals. He has energy, passion and the typical Millwall aggressiveness in his game.”
