Merrill Kelly threw five solid innings in his return and Adrian Del Castillo continued his impressive start to his major league career as the Arizona Diamondbacks crushed the Philadelphia Phillies 12-5 in Phoenix on Sunday.

Kelly (3-0) limited Philadelphia to two runs on three hits in his first major league appearance since April 15 (right shoulder injury). He allowed two walks, had two strikeouts and threw 85 pitches.

Del Castillo, who made his debut on Wednesday, had three more hits and scored two runs. The 24-year-old catcher has struck out 7 of 12 batters in his first three games, with one home run and five RBIs.

Jake McCarthy hit a three-run triple and finished with four RBIs, while Corbin Carroll hit a two-run homer for Arizona, yielding 18 hits. All 10 Diamondbacks at bat had one hit.

McCarthy and Kevin Newman each scored three hits as Arizona won three of four games against the National League-leading Phillies, winning its eighth consecutive series.

The Diamondbacks have won 15 of their last 18 games and are now tied with the San Diego Padres for the top wildcard spot in the NL.

Philadelphia left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (8-8) allowed a career-high 12 hits and seven runs in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed two walks and had four strikeouts.

Alec Bohm hit a two-run double in the first inning for the Phillies, who finished their Western tour 4-6. Philadelphia continues to lead the NL East by 7 1/2 games.

Arizona trailed 2-1 at the start of the third inning before Sanchez scored four runs during the inning.

After Eugenio Suarez’s one-out RBI double, Del Castillo gave the Diamondbacks a 4-2 lead when he chopped past Bryce Harper at first base, scoring Josh Bell and Suarez. Newman followed with a double, then Del Castillo scored on Sanchez’s wild pitch to make it 5-2.

McCarthy gave Arizona an 8-2 lead in the fifth inning with his bases-clearing triple against Tanner Banks, who had relieved Sanchez one batter earlier. Newman hit an RBI double against Orion Kerkering in the sixth inning.

The Phillies scored three runs against Dylan Floro in the seventh inning before the Diamondbacks responded with McCarthy’s RBI single and Carroll’s home run.

Arizona’s Lourdes Gurriel Jr. made a diving catch against the left field fence in the bottom of the third inning, but did not return for the fourth inning. According to the team, Gurriel was replaced with a strained left hamstring. Carroll replaced him in the lineup.
