Cubs injury updates: Good news, bad news

Cubs injury updates: Good news, bad news

On a day when a member of their opening rotation was back in town for the next step of his rehab process, the Cubs were forced to withdraw their third baseman due to injury.

Isaac Paredes was taken out of the starting lineup on Sunday due to right shoulder discomfort, the Cubs announced. Paredes was replaced at third base by Patrick Wisdom, who batted eighth.

It came a few hours after Jordan Wicks threw a “25ish” pitch in the bullpen at Wrigley Field. Wicks, who has been out since June 15 with a strained right oblique, is scheduled to make another rehab appearance with the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday.

His return to Chicago means that a return from the IL is in jeopardy.

“He’s got to pitch,” manager Craig Counsell said before Sunday’s final game of the series against the Blue Jays. “He’s admittedly a little rusty, so he’s got to get back on the mound, get into the routine of the bullpen and pitching, and then we’ll see where we are.”

Wicks viewed the bullpen session as a perfect opportunity to work on some of the finer points of his rehab stint.

In two rehab games with Iowa, Wicks allowed 10 earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks. Those results are a little misleading – when a pitcher is out that long, especially early in rehab, the focus is mostly on getting him healthy after each game.

“Getting in game shape is a big part of it,” Wicks said. “I did a lot of conditioning while I was sick to make it a little easier on myself. But it’s hard to get in game shape without being in a game.”

“And getting that back and then improving a few things about the pitch shape and mechanics is the main focus now.”
