The Good Life Index captures global trends and places its mixed-methods data analysis and a global survey of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in the larger context of current events.

As a citizenship and residency advisor, CS Global Partners is at the forefront of understanding the global changes affecting high net worth individuals.

In the first index, Monaco came top, closely followed by Denmark and Hong Kong. These countries were praised for their luxurious lifestyles, with the safety of their residents being the highest priority of their respective governments.

Coming in first place, Monaco has been praised for its high standards of education, healthcare and safety. In addition, its stunning Mediterranean nature and healthy Mediterranean lifestyle allow residents to live long, culturally vibrant lives.

The UK also received praise for its sixth place finish. Some countries outside the top ten may surprise readers, including the US and Germany.

“The Good Life Index is a timely assessment of the things that make life worth living: education, health, the environment. In an uncertain age, it is important for all of us to take a step back and think about what constitutes a good life,” said Micha Emmett, CEO of CS Global Partners.

One focus of the index is the relationship between age and quality of life. The survey of HNWIs conducted for the index found that 46 percent of 55- to 64-year-olds surveyed prioritized quality of life over other motivating factors for acquiring a second citizenship.

The index argued that with age comes greater financial stability and more time for leisure activities and socialising, allowing older HNWIs to prioritise quality of life over more pressing needs such as security (although quality of life requires security as a prerequisite).

The index also examined the relationship between geographic area and quality of life and found that quality of life is more of a priority in Africa and Europe than in other countries. The index found that quality of life is the least of a priority in Oceania and North America.

The Good Life Index also examined the worst-rated countries and explored the reasons why certain countries offer a low quality of life.

Somalia, Chad and South Sudan performed the worst in terms of quality of life. The three countries have problems implementing the rule of law and are embroiled in war, corruption and poverty.

Somalia, the country with the lowest quality of life, is battling a civil war and a food crisis. Faced with appalling poverty rates, low literacy rates, and frequent attacks by Al-Shabab and ISIS, Somalia struggles to maintain the necessary standard of living required for a high quality of life.

The Good Life Index is based on the World Citizenship Report, which ranks 188 countries on the five most important factors for global citizens: safety and security, economic opportunity, quality of life, global mobility and financial freedom.

With global instability, frequent elections and increasing generational change, the Good Life Index provides data-driven insights that are needed more than ever.
