CrowdStrike President personally accepts the award for the “Most Epic Fail”

CrowdStrike President personally accepts the award for the “Most Epic Fail”

In what was hailed as a classy move, the president of CrowdStrike appeared at the Def Con hacking conference in Las Vegas this weekend to personally accept the award for “Most Epic Fail” at the conference’s annual Pwnie Awards. The ceremony is meant to recognize “the successes (and failures) of security researchers and the security community,” and CrowdStrike was given the dubious honor because the company released a software update last month that ultimately triggered a worldwide IT outage, The Verge reports. “This is definitely not an award to be proud of,” Michael Sentonas began his speech after accepting what TechCrunch calls a “comically large trophy.”

Sentonas said the trophy will be taken to the company’s headquarters and placed “in a place of honor” for every employee who works there to see. “Because our goal is to protect people, and we got this wrong. And I want to make sure everyone understands that this can’t happen. And that’s what this community is about,” he said. He also explained why it was important to him to come and accept the award himself: “We got this horribly wrong. … And it’s super important to stand up for it when you do things well, it’s super important to stand up for it when you do things horribly wrong, which we did in this case.” (More CrowdStrike stories.)
