Cowboys QB Alan Bowman earns a spot on the Manning Award watch list

Cowboys QB Alan Bowman earns a spot on the Manning Award watch list

The Oklahoma State quarterback will compete for another award this fall.

On Thursday, the Manning Award nominees list was announced, and Oklahoma State quarterback Alan Bowman was on it. The award is given to the nation’s top quarterback before bowl season. This is the second day in a row that Bowman has been on a preseason nominee list for the award, and he earned a spot on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award nominee list on Wednesday.

Bowman is entering his second season in Stillwater after stints at Texas Tech and Michigan. After being out of the starting lineup in Lubbock and not getting much playing time in Ann Arbor, Bowman found the perfect place to end his career.

The veteran quarterback was part of a three-way battle for the starting job last season, competing with Garret Rangel and Gunnar Gundy. None of the three made an exceptional impression in the first three games, leading OSU coach Mike Gundy to rely on Bowman and his experience at the start of conference play.

Although his tenure at OSU got off to a rocky start, Bowman excelled as a full-time starter over the final 11 games, leading a passing attack that helped the Cowboys to 10 wins after a 2-2 start.

The signing of star receivers Brennan Presley and Rashod Owens helped Bowman reach his potential with the Cowboys. He finished the season with 3,460 yards, 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

While those numbers aren’t enough to win an award as the best quarterback in the country, he could have a chance next season if he can reduce his turnovers. The Cowboys are looking to win the Big 12 title and make a trip to the College Football Playoffs.

If the Cowboys can accomplish these goals, they could end 2024 with the honors of being the best quarterback and running back in the country.
